The surprise was instant from the joyous opening track and lead-off single, ‘It Goes and Comes Around’, with its clap and sing along feel. Described as “an anthem made for driving with the window down, foot to the floor”, this song is pure easy listening, its catchy tune and lyrical simplicity sure to make listeners tap their fingers on their steering wheels.
Ruebery keeps those fingers tapping for the next track, ‘Someday’, with its harmonious, smiley chorus, double hand claps and shiny, happy lyrics: “I love the way I feel with you, so special, standing here together by my side”. Ruebery, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer with a rich, Robbie Williams-like voice, certainly knows how to create a catchy, crowd-pleasing tune.
A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Ruebery has taught guitar in schools across the country and been an in-demand session musician for a variety of Welsh acts. His musical abilities are plainly evident upon hearing this debut album, which he wrote and co-produced himself, on which he played almost all the instruments, and that he released independently. Ruebery seems to have a knack for delivering instantly appealing songs and making it sound easy, a testament, no doubt, to his impressive musical background.
In turn, the gorgeous, melodic ballad ‘Because of You’ is bridal waltz material, something you might hear played for a bride and groom as they have their first dance. The lyrics are certainly wedding friendly: “For you, I live my life with you, it’s always love that brings us through”. Yes, it’s schmaltzy, but songs like this have paid the bills and then some for countless mainstream artists. Besides, Ruebery makes up for the generic lyrics with his lovely arrangement of the other musical elements, not least of all his beautiful, rich voice. Similarly, the great harmonies and strong vocals in ‘Burning Inside’ – a song about love and passion – make for a pleasant listen.
The dead air, wind and sea sound effects that introduce ‘In My Dream’ take the album in a slightly darker direction. A breath is taken, a guitar starts up, and Ruebery asks, “Are you drowning? I can’t see you, wind and tide take you away”. However, Ruebery quickly puts the album back on its feel-good course towards a happy ending, concluding, “You run to me, the fear is over, the dream it fades, ease my pain”.
The infectious musical energy of the early tracks returns for ‘She’s Been Waiting’, a stand out rock song with a catchy chorus, while final track ‘Question and Answer’ seems to sum up Ruebery’s overall album sentiment: “There’s so much love I can give”. Because of You is an album of consistently well-crafted, hum-along love songs that should make you want to tap your fingers and toes.
